Why I Chose to Become a Nurse

In my final years of high school, I spent a lot of time researching different careers in an attempt to find the right one. I stared by looking at my personality and the aspects of school that I excelled in and enjoyed. I found the sciences to be my favourite subject and that I had a particular interest in the healthcare system and medicine. Following considerable research, nursing seemed to be the perfect fit. In addition, a nursing job guarantee initiative by the Ontario government finalized my decision. Furthermore, nurses receive good pay, benefits, and a pension, which is always a plus when looking for a career. A nurse needs to be dedicated, focused, and most importantly caring. I have all of these characteristics, but I am always looking improve them through my studies. I enjoy the fact that nursing is a career that is ever changing and that I will always be required to further my education.

The Interesting Aspects of This Program

Throughout the nine weeks that I have been here, there have been many aspects of the nursing program that I have enjoyed. First of all, I didn’t know what to expect coming into university for the first time, but for the most part I was pleasantly surprised. I had a hard time handling all of the assignments that were thrown at me in the first month, but after that I seemed to be able to manage the workload. I also began to appreciate some of the responsibilities a nurse has and that I will have when I enter into clinical next semester. I really enjoy the simulation lab and the hands-on skills that I learned and practiced there. I can’t wait until I get to use and apply my knowledge in clinical next semester, and learn from an experienced nurse.

Why So Many Papers?

Coming to this technology based school for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, I had no idea that there was going to be so many writing assignments. I thought that this program was going to focus more on the hands-on aspects of nursing instead of writing endless amounts of papers. I do not mind writing papers but I would prefer doing something that will benefit me in my future career. I guess for the odd time that a nurse may have to write a paper in the future, I will be well prepared. I have found that applying the skills that we have learned in class to be more beneficial then writing a paper about these skills. The old saying that “practice makes perfect” is a good way to say that first year nursing students should have more time spent in the simulation labs practicing their skills needed for clinical. Sure, I understand that there is a lot of documentation involved in nursing, but writing a lengthy paper hardly helps with that. Maybe in the future when the program coordinators are looking at ways to improve the course they could allow students more class time to practice the skills they have learned within the simulation lab.

Healthcare and Technology

I believe that the new technologies that have been established and are in place in health care facilities to help health care professionals when it comes to overcoming the communication barriers within the health care system. With the shortage of nurses and translators within health care institutions, the health care systems are trying to implicate new technologies to improve efficiency. By doing this the health care facilities are attempting to allow nurses to communicate with all of their patients no matter what language they speak. There are many new technologies that are being created to help improve our health care system. People should be embracing this technology as we are becoming more and more dependent upon it.

A Bit About Me

Hello fellow Nursing Students,

Way back in 1990, on a cold, crisp, January morning, the world was changed forever! I was born; a mere 7lb 4oz child into a world filled with new and improving technologies. I grew up on a farm and was more or less oblivious to the technology surrounding me. I don’t know what interested me about coming to a technology based school; maybe it was the fact that I had dial up and never really had the opportunity to explore the internet and what it had to offer! I had never even heard of a blog, before a few days ago, but I am very excited to be able to share my thoughts and ideas through this wonder of technology.
